4 20 dud

So you know how life has its little coincidences? It does.

Now that I've laid down some truth. Wanted to share a little kismet. As you know today is/was 4:20 the day everyone is supposed to get super stoned or something. However its also Hitler's birthday. Adolf Hitler you know the guy right?

Now rewind to 2001... we were gearing up for war. War on terror you know the one. Anyway some peace minded folk decided to start a protest record label and put up free songs for download all types of underground musicians. All protest songs you see. One of those songs has always stuck with me.
Pictures of adolf by Jim O'Rourke

or so I thought I just realized today that the song is a cover as I found Okkervil River play the same song live and credit it to bill fay.
Okkervil's version

And to complete the circle.
Here is Bill Fay's version.

And just to run it into the ground Here is a video someone has made using Charlie Chaplin's portrayal of Hitler.

I'm not going to make commentary on the meaning of the song to me personally but its pretty hard not to draw the lines.

the corndawg in nashville

The corndawg is a traveling troubadour in the true sense. His form of touring is more like that of a hobo setting up camp in a a town for more then one night. He called his home Nashville for a a summer in 2004. Soon enough though he picked up his stakes and moved on.

on July 7th 2005 He came back to Nashville and played two shows on a real tour. The first a rawkus show at the springwater the second a low key show at the basement. I happened to record that second show and here for you are three of my favorite songs from that show.

the corndawg - blood from your side

the corndawg - ruby(kenny rogers cover)

the corndawg - tyrone

Yo La Tengo continued...

Looks like I have a job now, so expect weekly posts now instead of every other day. Trust me I feel just as bad about it as you do.

Well a little update for you on the ylt tip. The nashville concert will be broadcast on comcast channel 9. link. It will air some time in march, there is a free clip on the page as well of ylt performing the first song from that show. Looks and sounds great, so if you missed the sold out show...good news??? eh.

Also looking over their myspace about us section the channel 9 arts network plans to do more local original programing including something with stone jack jones and famous art body "Harry." They suggest writing to them and have included their address. Its good to see some television types besides the bat poet has taken a notice to the Nashville music scene. Much love to the poet.

On that note here is a track of stone jack jones on the stage back in the day. This, as I'm told was their first live performance as the band "stone jack jones" and the first live version of the pitchfork media loved blue folk material, link to review. Also we liked it quite a bit too.

yo I like yo la tengo

Last night yo la tengo played in nashville at the belcourt, a lovely theatre. The show was amazing and a joy to behold. I recommend going to see them when ever there is a chance. Also I recommend when in nashville you go to prince's hot chicken shack, as ylt do.

I was not able to record the show, sorry. However there was a film crew there and it looks like a dvd will get put out at some point, but who really knows. I do have a consolation for you reader.

Every April WFMU has a pledge drive for their station and every year ylt performs songs on request. You can request any song seriously, they'll play it. They'll attempt it and it'll only cost you 100 dollars. It goes to a great cause though upkeep for the greatest radio station in the world WFMU. I happened to be listening and I recorded the whole show.

This is the finale of their on-air performance where they usually do a medley to round down all the requests. As a bonus I've thrown my 2 other favorite songs from this years requests.

yo la tengo - ice cream (modern lovers)

yo la tengo - outdoor miner(wire)

Keep in mind this last one is 10 minutes long. Using love will tear us apart by Joy Division ylt go through I don't know how many songs... to name a few: Frank Sinatra - That’s Life; Bee Gees - Night Fever; Electric Prunes - I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night; Joey Scarbury - Believe It Or Not I’m Walking on Air (“The Greatest American Hero” theme song); Van Morrison – Madame George; Queen - Another One Bites The Dust; David Bowie – Starman; White Stripes – For The Love of Ivy. So yeah, enjoy.

Yo La Tengo - Love Will Tear Us Apart Medley

If you haven't yet go check out WFMU's amazing blog and tune in to the station. The best show on WFMU comes highly recommended. Cheers.

More Seth? NO... Give him the finger "The Ghostfinger.

Seth Moore is a local singer/song writer with a unique and interesting style. His sound is entirely his own and though his influences are clear... upon first listen a special sort of something occurs you feel sad and happy. Though you can't explain why...

Richie Kirkpatrick lead singer of ghostfinger is similar in his ability to illicit a response of sadness and joy. Its a more direct approach RK takes to convey this. Normally you find Richie backed by his gf but on this show he plays acoustic.

I'm glad I can share some of these sessions with you now from the first semester of the stage. Its clear both these men are trying to wake up the listener to an experience that is completely their own and immediate.

Richie Kirkpatrick - Shine a Light

Seth Moore - In The Intrest of Keeping the Peace

R kelly loves bread

There was a great and wonderful show on right before the stage, The Best of Bread. The host Chris Crofton (later joined by his brother Greg) discussed culture with a dry wit unheard on Nashville radio. Best of Bread is still on the air as well and if given the chance you should tune in.

Every once in a while I would accidentally record a little bit of their show. In this reoccurring segment Chris breaks down "skeptically" the finer points of a popular song/artist.
